Born in Greenmount to the east of Perth, Durbridge entered cycling through the sport of triathlon.
From the beginning, ‘Durbo’ was an exceptional time triallist. As an under-19, he won the junior national and world championships against the clock. He repeated the feat at under-23 level, winning the national time trial in Ballarat and the world title in Copenhagen.
He also became a Commonwealth Games medallist at the age of 19, winning bronze in the time trial at Delhi 2010.
In these early days, Durbridge enjoyed great success on the track, winning the junior team pursuit and Madison world titles for Australia, then teaming up with Jack Bobridge, Rohan Dennis and Michael Hepburn to win the elite team pursuit world championship in 2011.
In 2012, Durbridge turned professional with the new Australian WorldTour team, Orica GreenEDGE, and he has remained with that squad since.
His pro career began brilliantly when he won the elite national time trial championship in Ballarat. Durbridge has since added three more elite ITT national titles to his name: in 2013, 2019 and 2020.
2012 also saw Durbridge take his first WorldTour win in the prologue at the Critérium du Dauphiné, beating Bradley Wiggins by one second.
That was in addition to winning the general classification of the Circuit cycliste de la Sarthe and Tour du Poitou Charentes – both UCI 2.1 races – as well as their respective time trial stages.
2013 saw more success when Durbridge became the dual national champion of the time trial and the road race, winning the latter after a solo effort from the early breakaway.
Durbridge has reliably plied his trade as a top time triallist, strong rouleur and dependable teammate. He is a fixture of the Spring Classics, having raced Paris-Roubaix and the Ronde van Vlaanderen ten times each. He has also participated in every Tour de France since 2014.
He won the Duo Normand two-man time trial with Svein Tuft in 2013, the Oceania road race championship in 2014, and the time trial at Three Days of De Panne in 2017.
As of 2024, he has represented Australia at two Commonwealth Games (Delhi 2010 and Glasgow 2014), one Olympic Games (Tokyo 2020) and nine elite UCI Road World Championships. The latter includes winning a bronze medal for Australia in the mixed relay team time trial at Wollongong 2022.
