    Biography

    Phil Bates AM is a cornerstone figure in cycling promotion and administration, whose contributions have significantly shaped the sport's development and visibility.

    Bates founded and directed the Commonwealth Bank Cycle Classic from 1982 to 2000, a premier stage race that attracted international talent and provided a platform for emerging Australian cyclists. The event featured 19 editions, with notable winners including Jan Ullrich in 1993 and Jens Voigt in 1994.

    “The Commonwealth Bank Bicentennial Cycle Classic staged over 1860 kilometres from Gold Coast to Melbourne,” he recalled. “It attracted and introduced an enormous number of journalists and spectators to the sport, including coercing Phil Liggett, ‘The Voice of Cycling’, to Australia for the first time.”

    Bates has been a dedicated member of the St George Cycling Club for over five decades, including a remarkable 27 years as president. His leadership has been instrumental in the club's growth and success, fostering a strong community of cyclists.

    From 1993 to 2001, Bates served on the UCI Track Commission, contributing to the development and governance of track cycling on the international stage. Bates also staged World Series Cycling from 1986-88, the Qantas Cup National Track Series, World Cup Track in Adelaide in 1995 and 1997, plus was Chairman of the 1997 World Track Championships.  He was also a proponent for women’s cycling, staging five World Cups and five editions of the Tour de Snowy, attracting the best female rides from around the globe.

    In recognition of his extensive service to Australian cycling, Phil Bates AM was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia. His legacy endures through his unwavering commitment to the sport and the numerous athletes and communities he has supported throughout his career.

    “Proud that my many years as an administrator, my vision, my mentoring and various promotions and events has been rewarded with the highest possible award.  I am delighted to be a recipient,” Bates said of his induction into AusCycling’s Hall of Fame.
