AusCycling wishes to inform all members, clubs and stakeholders of finalised updates to the AusCycling Technical Regulations, effective January 1, 2026.

The updated AusCycling Technical Regulations for each discipline can be found here

These 2026 AusCycling Technical Regulations follow on from the October announcement of how new UCI Equipment Regulations would be implemented in Australia, with those regulation positions now confirmed in the relevant discipline’s Technical Regulations.

All changes to the AusCycling Technical Regulations come into effect after consultation with commissaires, AusCycling Technical Committee, industry, coaches, performance and pathways teams and are clearly marked in the updated official documentation.

Major changes include:

Road

  • Confirmed implementation of the regulations announced on October 1 that relate to AusCycling’s position on forthcoming UCI Equipment Regulations.
  • At junior national, state and territory road championships and junior tours or series; under-15 riders must use the same bike at all events. A future change for 2028 has also been implemented that will see under-17 riders use the same bike at all above events.

Rationale: This will make participation in road cycling more accessible for participants while not impacting rider development.

Road, Track and Gravel

  • Standardised gearing for under-15 and under-17 riders. Maximum roll out distance increased from 6.1 metres to 7 metres.

Rationale: This change supports rider development and improves accessibility for road bikes, while maintaining competitive speeds and enhancing technical skills without compromising safety.

  • Note: 7 metres is the maximum permitted gearing and does not need to be adopted immediately. Riders can introduce this change gradually, allowing them to progress at a pace that suits their individual development.

Gravel

  • Increased maximum distances for under-17 and under-19 events.

Rationale: These are increased in line with increased road race distances which were implemented by the UCI and followed by AusCycling in 2024.

Cyclo-cross

  • Age groups will now run from the current year instead of the following year for all events excluding National Series and National Championships for under-17, under-19, under-23 and elite riders.

Rationale: Categories will now run in line with all other disciplines and make it easier for participants to know which category they compete in. National events are excluded in categories where selection or pathway development is the priority.
