Preview: Red Centre ready for BMX National rounds 4 and 5

Aug 25, 2022

This weekend, the Northern Territory will host it first national BMX race in three years when Alice Springs welcomes the AusCycling BMX National Rounds 4 and 5.

More than 300 riders will look forward to attacking the newly renovated track at Red Centre BMX.

It’s the last national-level meet before the national championships in November, with critical points on the line in the AusCycling BMX National Cup.

Riders

355 riders have signed up for this weekend’s races at Red Centre BMX.

It’ll be an all-star field in the Superclass Women, with five of the top six in the National Cup set to start. Only Sienna Pal is missing as she continues to recover from an ACL injury.

The top three – Bella May (Frankston BMX Club), Teya Rufus (Maryborough BMX Club) and Gemma-Lee Thomas (Castle Hill BMX Club) – will be fighting for every place, being separated by only 90 points at this stage.

Former elite national champion Erin Lockwood (Nerang BMX Club) will also be well in the mix.

For the Superclass Men, National Cup leader Alex Cameron (Sydney BMX Club) will aim to extend his advantage at the top of the standings. He’ll face a challenge against the likes of Matty Tidswell (The Cove BMX Club), who won round 2 back in January. Tidswell currently sits sixth in the standings, but can potentially leapfrog to the top after this weekend.

One to watch for is 16-year-old Joshua Jolly (Ballarat Sebastopol CC), who currently leads the Junior Superclass National Cup but will ride up in the Superclass category this weekend.

Junior Superclass Women’s leader Charli Guy (Ashmore BMX Club) will also be in action.

In addition, the full gamut of riders including Mini Wheelers, Cruisers and all manner of age group racers will take to the red soil of Alice Springs.
