‘I’m braver than I thought’: She Rides heroes set for milestone ride to support a great cause
Oct 24, 2022
For five women, riding 50 kilometres this month will close a powerful chapter in their journey from complete beginner to accomplished rider.
This year, the five riders have been rapidly building their bike skills and confidence under AusCycling’s She Rides: Zero to Hero initiative.
They started as novices – some simply did not ride at all – but with the steady guidance of a She Rides mentor, they’re ready to tackle the 50km Heroes Ride in Wollongong on October 30, raising money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF).
One of the Zero to Hero riders is Michelle Yeatman, who says the progression she’s made on her e-bike over the last four months has been remarkable.
“It’s really increased my confidence,” Yeatman said. “I still have phobias about going downhills, but I’ve learnt to manage them.
“My riding has changed. My speed has increased, and I’ve learnt lots of skills, which has just been fantastic.
“I think I’ve also learnt that I’m much braver than I thought. I have embarked on different terrains, and I never really thought I would be able to achieve that. It’s just been wonderful.”
Yeatman said that from day one, the Zero to Hero group felt comfortable and confident under the care of their mentor, Jules.
“It’s just been such a – look, I get emotional – it’s been such a wonderful experience. I feel very honoured to have instructions off such a fantastic coach in Jules. She just makes you feel very comfortable. Very at ease, and she’s very, very professional.”
You can support these women, support breast cancer research, and go into the draw for cycling prizes by purchasing Zero to Hero raffle tickets. Funds raised will go towards research that supports NBCF's vision of zero deaths from breast cancer.
The cause resonates especially for Yeatman, who is a nurse of 22 years and works at a cancer clinic.
“I think it’s a very important and significant cause to be riding for. I’m very proud to be part of it,” she said.
The campaign aims to raise $10,000 through the NBCF raffle. Prizes include:
- 1st prize: 2022 Kalkhoff Endeavour e-bike valued at $4,999, donated by PON.
- 2nd prize: $1,000 voucher to online cycling marketplace BikeChain.
- 3rd prize: Rubber Side Down gift pack valued at $300.
To purchase a ticket, visit the NBCF website. Entries close on Tuesday, November 29.
