One regional club is punching above its weight in 2026.
Backed by a fresh committee and a strong focus on community, Moranbah BMX Club is building momentum through coaching, events and a welcoming family environment that continues to attract new riders.
With a population of under 10,000, Moranbah is a coal mining town located in Central Queensland, some two hours from Mackay and six hours south of Townsville.
Sporting clubs bring life, vibrance and connection to regional remote communities, and Moranbah BMX Club is making the most of its opportunities.

One of the biggest boosts this year has been the return of club coaching, which is helping riders of all ages and skill levels develop confidence and improve their racing in a fun and supportive atmosphere.
The club has also strengthened its community presence through major events, recently hosting the North Queensland Games alongside its annual race meeting.
Out of a membership base of around 200, many are thriving in high-level racing: 13 riders have qualified for the UCI BMX Racing World Championships in Brisbane next month.

For local riders like Harper Matthews, who races in the 10 Girls category, the club environment makes a massive difference.
“I love Moranbah BMX Club because we have a great track to practice on and our club has a long history of fast riders,” he said.
That sense of history and pride continues to drive the club forward. Over the past 12 months, Moranbah BMX Club has welcomed a new committee focused on creating a positive and inclusive culture around the track.
“We’ve had basically a whole new committee come on board with a fresh outlook and a real focus on growing the club in a positive direction,” a spokesperson for the club said.
“Coaching, creating a welcoming environment and modernising the club are all big priorities for us moving forward.”

Moranbah members were delighted by a a guest coaching session from 2025 national champion Hayden Fletcher.
Volunteers and committee members are working hard to secure funding for major repairs to the club’s first berm, ensuring the facility continues to improve for future generations of riders.
The club’s family-friendly atmosphere remains at the centre of everything, from weekly gate sessions through to fun themed race nights and planned Sunday sessions aimed at bringing families together.
