Brisbane Cycling Festival wins two Australian Sport, Recreation and Play Innovation Awards

Jul 12, 2022

AusCycling and its Brisbane Cycling Festival have won the overall prize for the Sport, Recreation and Play Innovation Award at the 2022 Sport, Recreation and Play Innovation Awards, held in Melbourne yesterday evening.

Brisbane Cycling Festival was also announced as the winner of the Major Event Promotion category, which is awarded on the rational of providing community opportunities to grow participation by aligning a mass participation or a major spectator event.

The award for the overall prize for the Sport, Recreation and Play Innovation Award, is based on the ten category winners and judged as being the organisation or event that has activated or has the potential to activate significant numbers of people across Australia due to their work.

AusCycling CEO Marne Fechner was in attendance to accept the awards.

The Brisbane Cycling Festival rolled back into Brisbane earlier this year from March 24 to April 14 with a new lease of life, and hosted the 2022 AusCycling Track National Championships and the first combined Oceania Cycling Championships for BMX racing, BMX freestyle, downhill and cross-country mountain biking, road, and track.

#TrackNats22 was the opening event hosted at Anna Meares Velodrome, catering for all categories including junior, elite and under-19, para-cycling and masters.

The celebration of cycling came together at the Brisbane Showgrounds with a free community event.

Brisbane Cycling Festival also played host to 141 supporting events, activities, and workshops.

The finale of the festival was Australia’s ultimate Sunday ride Australian Unity Tour de Brisbane.

Overall, the festival had more than 43,000 people take part, created more than 90 hours of broadcast, and was delivered by a team that included more than 1000 volunteers.

AusCycling strives to continue to grow the Brisbane Cycling Festival and is excited for the next edition of the festival in 2023.

AusCycling thanks Brisbane Economic Development Agency and Tourism and Events Queensland for their ongoing support of the Brisbane Cycling Festival.
