Team Australia capped off a successful 2026 UCI BMX Racing World Championships, winning 13 Challenge and Masters W1 plates across four days of racing at home.
A sea of green-and-gold jerseys flooded the Brisbane SX International BMX Centre with more than 1,000 Australian riders from as young as eight up to 69 years old competing in Challenge and Masters categories.
Among the Australian winners were Sunshine Coast’s Corey Frieswyk, who defended his Masters world title, and 52-year-old Brisbane mum Letitia Weatherhead who took out the 50+ Cruiser Women crown.
Weatherhead’s win was made even more special having her daughter Zoe, 15, also representing Australia in Brisbane.

“I feel like I’m in a dream, I’m just so happy that I’m here and I’m racing at 52 years old. I’m still racing world titles,” Weatherhead said.
“I raced when I was a kid. I started when I was nine, and I gave it away when I was 17. I had a big, big gap, then when I was 40 and my daughter was two, she picked up a balance bike and we started taking her to tracks.
“I watched other mothers race, I always missed it, I always loved it. So, I started over 10 years ago now and here we are.
“It just shows you, never give up. You are good enough, you can do it.”
AusCycling Executive General Manager – Major Events Steve Peterson said the 2026 UCI BMX Racing World Championships were an outstanding success.
“I'm enormously proud of our AusCycling team, delivery partners, volunteers, officials and stakeholders who worked tirelessly to create a world-class event and an unforgettable experience for athletes and fans," he said.
"While the weather presented challenges beyond anyone's control, the resilience, professionalism and positive attitude shown throughout the championship were remarkable. The event showcased not only the very best of BMX Racing, but also the strength of the Australian BMX community working together to deliver something special."
"The atmosphere throughout the championship was exceptional. We saw passionate crowds, world-class competition, strong international engagement and a fantastic showcase of BMX Racing. Events like this inspire the next generation of riders, and we're excited about the role they will play in continuing to grow the sport across Australia."
