2025 BMX Racing Development Academy Update
BMX Pathway Manager – Performance Luke Madill provides an update on the key changes to the BMX Racing Development Academy in 2025
Nov 28, 2024
Following valuable feedback from riders, parents, and coaches, AusCycling is making key adjustments to the BMX Racing Development Academy program for 2025.
After almost three years of operation, it's clear there is a need for further growth and alignment across the program to ensure consistency in training, messaging, and development opportunities, for riders and coaches alike.
To address these areas, the academy will transition back to a national program for 2025, with a focus on enhancing education for both riders and coaches.
This change aims to ensure a unified approach to the BMX racing pathway, providing riders with clearer guidance and more opportunities for long-term development and success.
What does the national program look like?
In 2025, the BMX Racing Development Academy will continue to select riders from each state and territory as in previous years. However, the key difference will be a more unified approach, with all riders coming together under the guidance of the national coach at a series of training camps and online seminars throughout the year.
This will ensure a consistent development pathway and a shared coaching philosophy across all states and territories.
Additionally, there will be extra training support at selected state and territory series events, with the national coach providing primary guidance and oversight.
This national framework will offer riders a broader education when it comes to coaching, while maintaining the state/territory representation and focus that has been a hallmark of the program.
Certain states and territories receive additional external funding, with further localised development opportunities to be allocated accordingly.

With the 2026 UCI BMX Racing World Championships in Brisbane on the horizon, this adjustment will better equip riders and coaches to prepare effectively for this landmark event.
By aligning training camps with national series rounds, selected riders will gain more value from attending these events, making their travel and participation even more beneficial.
Coaches will also have the opportunity to attend the camps and participate in specialised coaching seminars, ensuring that a consistent message is delivered across all states and territories.
The ultimate goal for 2025 is to build a stronger foundation for the program that supports both individual riders and coaches within the BMX community.
This strategic shift will lay the groundwork for expanding the Development Academies back into state and territory programs in 2026, helping to foster a more cohesive and effective pathway for the future of BMX racing in Australia.
Following the 2025 state and national championships, there will be a quick transition to the 2026 program, ensuring that Development Academy riders are fully prepared both physically and mentally for the 2026 world championships.
