MacRae, Doherty, Stevenson win AusCycling Esports Tour

Nov 1, 2021

The inaugural AusCycling Esports Tour concluded on Sunday with Angela MacRae winning A Grade Women and Tony Doherty and Trent Stevenson jointly winning A Grade Men.

The three-stage Zwift race comprised an 8km individual time trial followed by two road stages, including the fearsome Epic KOM and Radio Tower climb on Stage 2.

The general classification was decided on a points system, with each stage winner scoring 30 points and each successive finisher scoring one point less.

A Grade Women

MacRae (Hawthorn Cycling Club, Evolution Cycling), was simply dominant, claiming victory in all three stages by a huge margin over runner-up Ing Hammer (Hobart Wheelers / Dirt Devils). Megan Gammie (Chaotic Energy Racing) took the final podium spot.

The Tour was briefly graced by the participation of former track cycling world champion Rebecca Wiasak (AERO Community Team), who rode the opening time trial in C Grade.

A Grade Men

Before the final stage on the Richmond UCI World Championship course, Doherty (Velofit Australia) had taken the overall lead with an ITT victory and second place on Stage 2. However, Stevenson (Echuca Moama) remained in contention, hovering only two points behind.

Stevenson seized an opportunity to close the gap after Doherty was distanced on the ascent of Libby Hill. Stevenson helped drive the lead group and, in the final sprint, took maximum points to draw level with Doherty and share the overall spoils.

Mitch Zito (Shepparton) took third place on the overall podium.
