Two Gran Fondos to spice up super September
Jul 6, 2022
Two of Australia's biggest Gran Fondos are on the menu this September - so kit up and get out there to make the most of what will be an amazing month for cycling down under.
Port Douglas Gran Fondo Festival
The Port Douglas Gran Fondo Festival will be held in one of the most beautiful locations in the world, Tropical North Queensland.
The three-day festival is the perfect excuse to visit and explore this stunning region.
The 136km and 100km Gran Fondo courses, and the 48km Medio Fondo (Medium Ride) which will be held on Sunday, September 11.
These rides will be timed but are not a race, so you can choose to challenge yourself for a best time, or take the time to soak in the beautiful surroundings. Stop to take photos, enjoy the experience with family and friends and most importantly, stay safe.
The Port Douglas Gran Fondo courses will take you along Great Barrier Reef Drive between Port Douglas and Palm Cove, while taking in breathtaking views through the palm trees alongside the Coral Sea. This road will be fully closed to traffic to allow you to really enjoy the ride and scenic course.
Other events across the Festival weekend include the Cairns Post Criterium, Hemingway’s Brewery Sprint, Choo Choos FREE Family Ride, Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina Festival Expo, local live music and after party! The perfect excuse to bring the whole family to Port Douglas for a holiday.
While you are here, there are endless experiences to appeal to everyone. Jump on Quicksilver Cruises and snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef, see crocodiles up close at Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures, cuddle a koala at Wildlife Habitat, explore the Daintree Rainforest on a guided walk through Mossman Gorge, enjoy drinks on sunset at Hemingway’s Brewery, and so much more!
Former Australian Cycling Team star and Port Douglas Gran Fondo Festival ambassador Annette Edmondson said she couldn't wait to ride her bike along the pristine waters of the far north.
"As a professional cyclist I have ridden my bike all over the world, but I’ve never had the opportunity to ride on Great Barrier Reef Drive, one of the most beautiful roads in Australia," she said.
"I can’t wait to join thousands of other cyclists from across Australia and around the world in September to ride in the Port Douglas Gran Fondo Festival.
"But I think I’m more excited about using this event as the perfect excuse to escape to Tropical North Queensland for a holiday to explore the endless number of experiences in the region.
"I can’t wait to feed a giant crocodile at Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures! Then snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef, explore the Daintree Rainforest, go for a swim at Four Mile Beach, have a cold beer at Hemingway’s Brewery, and so much more.
"With lots to do I’ll have to stay for two weeks!"
