Clubs in Focus: How Western Sydney MTB Club is Protecting Trails for Future Generations

For more than 30 years, Western Sydney Mountain Bike Club (WSMTBC) has demonstrated that mountain biking and environmental stewardship go hand in hand.

Based at Yellomundee Regional Park in the Blue Mountains, within the traditional country of the Boorooberongal Clan of the Darug people, WSMTBC has become one of New South Wales’ most active and diverse MTB clubs. The club has built a reputation for not only developing riders but also protecting one of Western Sydney’s most treasured trail networks.

Central to this commitment is WSMTBC’s longstanding partnership with the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NSW NPWS). Working collaboratively, the club maintains the trail network on behalf of NSW NPWS through monthly maintenance days, helping preserve the natural environment while ensuring safe and sustainable club days.

These maintenance days are led by the club’s committee and dedicated Track Work Coordinator  Mikhyle Jordaan, with volunteers encouraged to get involved. They run alongside Club Day, where members can enjoy a social ride, explore the trail network, meet committee members, and connect with the club’s dedicated junior and women’s riding groups.

The trails at Yellomundee hold a special place in the club’s history. Winding through a unique bushland corridor overlooking the Nepean River and its surrounding tributaries, they offer riders an opportunity to experience nature while reinforcing the importance of responsible trail use.

By maintaining the network, WSMTBC actively supports erosion mitigation and weed management. The club’s regular presence also helps discourage unauthorised trail building, vandalism, and illegal dumping, ensuring the park remains a healthy and enjoyable space for everyone.

The club credits its positive relationship with NSW NPWS to years of coordination, consultation, perseverance, and compromise. Together, they have created a model that balances recreation with conservation, demonstrating how community clubs can play an important role in caring for public land.

While its home trails remain at the heart of the club, WSMTBC also delivers events throughout Western Sydney and works alongside clubs across the state to grow participation in the mountain biking community.

The club caters to riders of all disciplines including cross country, gravity enduro, downhill, cyclo-cross, and “critcross” – a hybrid of criterium and cyclo-cross.

Its thriving junior development program provides regular coaching, race opportunities, and mentoring, helping young riders build technical skills as well as confidence, resilience, friendships, and community. The club has also grown participation through dedicated women’s rides, social events, and skills clinics, ensuring riders of all ages and abilities feel welcome.

For WSMTBC, looking after the trails is about more than maintaining riding conditions: it’s about preserving an important natural asset for future generations and creating a community that values the environment as much as the sport itself.

As the Vice President of Western Sydney Mountain Bike Club, Dave Ludenia, puts it:

“WSMTB is the kind of club where you can turn up for your very first race and immediately feel part of the crew. Whether you’re chasing podiums, building confidence, learning to corner or just riding for the love of it, there’s always someone ready to cheer you on, lend a hand or help you level up.”

More than three decades after it was established, Western Sydney Mountain Bike Club continues to prove that strong communities are built not only through riding together, but by working together to care for the places that make sport possible.
