AusCycling 2021 World Bicycle Day Hub
May 31, 2021
June 3rd, Thursday
To foster the environmental stewardship and health through bikes, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 3rd as World Bicycle Day.
This day embraces everything related to cycling and emphasizes the importance of the responsibilities left on the shoulders of our stakeholders to advance the use of bicycles in all means, shape and form while fostering sustainable development, strengthening education, including physical education, for children and young people, promoting health, preventing disease, promoting tolerance, mutual understanding and respect, and facilitating social inclusion and a culture of peace.
AusCycling is a tightly networked community of people who love all things two wheels and we aim to make cycling not just a sport, but a passion and way of life for every Australian, no matter where they are in their cycling journey.
However you’re celebrating the bicycle this World Bicycle Day, AusCycling wants to join you! Below are just of the many ways you can join us on the day!
History of World Bicycle Day
The history of world bicycle day does not date back too far. It was only until 2017 when Professor Leszek Sibilski, a Polish social scientist in the United States, started a grassroots sports campaign in his sociology class to promote a UN Resolution for a dedicated bicycle day in the international calendar. As a result, he was backed by 56 other countries and eventually on June 2018, The United Nations General Assembly created a resolution and declared June 3rd as World Bicycle Day.
According to the resolution recognizes this day as "the uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle, which has been in use for two centuries, and that it is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transport."
Through the years, there has been a stronger emphasis on using this day to advocate the health benefits of cycling especially to beat diseases like type 2 diabetes. Within this space, there have also been initiatives drawn to use cycling as a tool to break down societal issues and barriers, more so in the lower socio-economic regions.
