South Australia’s Tommy Chapman has taken out the Elite Men’s national title at the 2022 AusCycling Cyclo-Cross National Championships held in Wollongong today (Saturday 17 September).

Competing against former national winners on a gruelling course, the Port Adelaide Cycling Club (PACC) and Team Bridgelane rider finished with a commanding 1 minute 26 second lead against Queenslander Cameron Wright.

The win earns Chapman UCI international points alongside fellow South Australians Talia Simpson (Adelaide Mountainbike Club), who won Under 23s Women and Will Holmes (Norwood Cycling Club) who took home silver in Under 19s Men.

Other South Australian winners in the peak Australian event for cyclocross racing included gold medallists John Allison in Masters 8 Men and Anna Kubilius in Masters 2 Women.

Upcoming riders Maddie Wasserbaech (PACC) took out silver in the Under 17s Women while Liam Underwood (Norwood CC) and Evan Hawkes (PACC) won bronze in the Under 15s Men and Under 13s Men.

Richard Bates (PACC), Bruce Wilson (PACC) and Nick Underwood (Norwood CC) also took home bronze medals in the Master 6 Men, Master 7 Men and Master 3 Men competitions.

PACC President Gemma Kernich said Chapman’s win would further strengthen cyclocross racing in South Australia.

“To have someone of Tommy’s calibre take home gold is inspiring to existing and future riders and with so much upcoming talent, we look forward to seeing more cyclists follow Tommy’s example,” she said.

“South Australia has always been a leader in cyclocross racing in this country and I have no doubt this sport will continue to grow.”
