An Action-Packed Weekend of Racing at the Adelaide Superdrome Awaits!

A full weekend of racing!

This weekend, AusCycling SA is proud to host a massive weekend of track racing at the world-class Adelaide Superdrome, with the Madison National Championships and Sprint State Championships taking place during a very busy Adelaide Track League program on Saturday night, and 6 disciplines of Elite and Masters State Championship racing taking place over the rest of the weekend!

Adelaide Track League is the jewel in the crown of the weekend’s program, with Staazi & Co and Wood n Wheels coming out to keep you fed, tunes by DJ Nelya, the bar open and serving Big Shed Brewing Co, Pirate Life and Alpha Box & Dice, and the Nation’s best Madison teams and sprinters putting on perhaps the best racing that’s been seen at the Superdrome in years.

In the Men’s Madison it’s going to be hard to beat the pairing of Cam Meyer and Kell O’Brien, who finished 1 and 2 in the recent Road Nationals race at Ballarat, but Leigh Howard and Sam Welsford who have seen their fair share of success at Adelaide Track League events will certainly put up a fight. Dark horse pairing Luke Plapp (recent stage winner at the Santos Festival of Cycling) and Jensen Plowright (winner of the last National Criterium Series) could take the win, and State Institute teams from QLD, NSW and SA will do their best to take it to the Aussie Olympic athletes.

The South Australian Sports Institute riders Kat Chung-Orr, Amber Pate, Alli Anderson and recent Clarence St Cup winner Meg Marker will have their work cut out for them racing against the likes of Olympic athletes Georgia Baker and Annette Edmondson, Alex Manly and Ash Ankudinoff, and young guns Maeve Plouffe and Lauren Perry will be looking to make their mark as well as the Academy pairing of Alex Martin-Wallace and Sophie Edwards.

The Sprint State Championship has absolutely stacked fields, with Olympic athletes and multiple World Champions peppered across the fields. Kaarle McCulloch goes into the Women’s competition the favourite with Academy sprinter and former National Madison champ herself Kristina Clonan hot on her heels, and a bevy of riders who have proven themselves quick enough to go with the best at recent Track Nationals turning up. It will be great racing between the likes of Jacqui Mengler-Mohr, Bree Hargrave, Lara Tucker, Caitlin Ward, Ella Sibley and Lizanne Fox from across the country. Matt Glaetzer will be the one to beat in the Men’s Sprint, with fellow Olympic hopefuls Matthew Richardson and Nathan Hart looking to topple the so-far unbeaten Adelaide Track League sprint champ. Young guns in Leigh Hoffman, Tom Cornish and James Brister alongside SA’s Carlos Carisimo and QLD’s Byron Davies will be in with a shot too, flexing their sprint muscles for the Adelaide crowd.

Saturday’s racing kicks off with two sessions of State Championship racing in the daytime with spectators welcome to fill the stands and catch some racing. There’ll be Kilo/TT racing in the morning as well as Individual Pursuits, followed by combined Masters Keirins & Points Races and the Elite Sprint Qualifying in the afternoon before a break to the ATL program. The Superdrome kiosk will be open for refreshments from approx. 11am-4pm.

The Adelaide Track League program above starts at 5:30 with Junior and Support racing allowing for some breaks between Sprint Finals, and the Women’s Madison National Championships will take place just after 7pm. Medal finals for the sprinters will be run and won after the Women’s Mado, and the Men’s Madison National Championships will headline the evening’s racing , beginning around 9pm.

Sunday will have two more sessions of racing, the Masters Sprint State Championships taking place from 10am before the Elite Sprinters from the night before line up to race behind a motorbike in the Keirin State Championships from 12:30pm. The Kiosk will be open again as the Keirin heats are run, then the Masters Scratch Race State Championships before the Keirin State Champs finals. After the State Championship racing is done, we’ll be on track for a few more hours with the Mad Mado, some low-stakes but high-octane Keirin and Madison racing for all your favourite riders from Saturday night’s racing to see how they back up in different teams!

At each non-Adelaide Track League session of racing, we’ll be taking a voluntary gold-coin donation at the door to go towards the Junior State Team going to Track Nationals in April.

Some answers to questions we’ve been asked!

Accessibility – There’s accessible parking for spectators who require it in the northern car park, and the front entrance is accessible by a ramp. If you’ll have difficulty with the ramp, park in the southern car park and use the lift to get upstairs!

Tickets on the door – if the Saturday night event doesn’t sell out, we will have the remainder of tickets available for sale on the door. To avoid missing out, we recommend getting your tickets online if you can! Tickets are available at https://adelaidetrackleague.com, adults are $15 and kids under 15 are free!

What if I’m already here? – All spectators will be asked to vacate the stands at the end of the second session of racing on Saturday to allow for the area to be tidied up ready for the ATL program.

COVID-Safe Rules – This event will be covered by a COVID-Safe Plan, and social distancing is to be observed at all times. Drinks are to be consumed seated! If you are unwell or unable to attend under the current Directions in SA – please get in touch with us at [email protected] and we will refund your ticket entry.

I can't make it - is there a livestream? - There sure is! We're lucky to have the support of The Advertiser who are streaming the Saturday night's racing session from 5:30pm ACDT over at their website. You can read a preview about Kaarle McCulloch racing here, and the livestream link will be shared on that page too!
